Detainee facing death as his heart condition worsens

author Thursday July 10, 2008 06:25author by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News Report post

Palestinian detainee Basheer Hashshash, 28, is currently facing a sharp deterioration in his health condition as he is suffering from a heart condition, high cholesterol and high blood pressure but is not receiving the needed medical treatment due to ongoing rejection by the Israeli Prison Administration.

Secretary-general of the Palestinian Popular (Folk) Committees Azmi Shiokhy stated that the four brothers of Basheer died due to the same conditions, and added that Basheer is now very weak and needs urgent medical attention.

Shiokhy voiced an appeal to the international community and the Red Cross to intervene for the release of Basheer in order to enable him to receive the needed medical attention.

He slammed the ongoing Israeli violations against the detainees, and the lack of food and clothes.

Shiokhy also said that all sick detainees have the right to receive medical treatment, adding that this right is guaranteed by international agreements and the Fourth Geneva Conventions.

He stated that medical negligence practiced against the detainees is causing further complications and is another Israeli attempt aiming at breaking the will of the detainees and their steadfastness.

It is worth mentioning that more than 195 detainees died in Israeli prisons since 1967. Some of them died due to medical negligence while others died due to extreme torture.

The Society stated that there are 1200 detainees who are suffering from several diseases while some of them are paralyzed or suffering from injuries sustained during their arrest.

The Nafha Society which defends Detainees Rights and Human Rights recently reported that there are 41 detainees who are currently at the Al Ramla Prison Hospital. Some of them need dialysis; others have been through surgeries for implants of artificial intestines and bladders while others are suffering from cancer or chronic diseases.
