Monday morning, Israeli soldiers uncovered a tunnel leading from a town in the Gaza Strip to a nearby Israeli settlement.

The recently dug tunnel, said to be 20 meters long, goes from the town of Khan Younis toward an industrial zone in the settlement of Neve Dekalim, passing underneath an Israeli checkpoint. It could have allowed Palestinian fighters to infiltrate into the settlement, an Israeli military source reported.

According to Israeli media reports, the Palestinian Authority relayed intelligence information about the tunnel to the Israeli army.

Israeli security forces reportedly believe that the tunnel was dug by activists of Hamas or the Islamic Jihad.

Five soldiers were killed  in December 2004 when the resistance detonated explosives underneath a military base, using a tunnel dug by members of the military wing of the Islamic Jihad.

Also, the Israeli army claims that Islamic Jihad fighters fired five homemade shells at a settlement in Gaza on Sunday. No injuries were reported.
