Dozens of Palestinian prisoners, inside the Israeli Hadareem jail, are reportedly prepared to start a collective open hunger strike, in the near future.
The Ramallah-based Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) said, on Wednesday, that the hunger strike comes in response to maltreatment of inmates in the Hadareem prison.
The PPS added that a part of that mistreatment, according to many testimonies, is the denial of phone calls to family members back in the occupied West Bank and the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip.
In a statement, issued earlier today, by the PPS, maltreatment includes lack of medical attention in the context of the coronavirus, which has has been the reason for family visit cancellation.
The statement added that such a planned open hunger strike by the prisoners of Hadareem, would also constitute a message of protest at other forms of Israeli maltreatment inside other Israeli prisons and detention facilities.
These include the Al-Ramla prison clinic, the Damon prison, which have reported medical negligence, as well as substandard cafeteria services.
Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike has remained the sole battle, called also the ’empty stomachs battle’, which Palestinian prisoners, in general, have waged over the past several decades.
Some of those battles, either at individual or group levels, bore some fruits.
