An Israeli military source reported on Friday morning, that one Israeli Border Policeman was stabbed near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the West Bank city of Hebron.

The soldier sustained moderate wounds, and was transferred to Hadassah University Hospital, in Ein Karem area in Jerusalem.

The Israeli Radio reported that soldiers arrested one resident who had allegedly attempted to cut the soldiers’ throat, and transferred him to the Shin Bet security services for interrogation.  

The Israeli army reported recently that such incidents are likely to re-occur in the coming period following the assassination of five Palestinians in Tulkarem, on Wednesday at night. 

Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movements vowed to avenge the assassination, and the continuous military operations in several Palestinian areas. Israeli army leaders said that the military establishment takes these threats seriously.

On Wednesday, August 24, a 21-year old Yeshiva student, identified as Shmuel Matt, was stabbed to death in Jerusalem, and his friend was seriously injured.

Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, slammed the Israeli military operation in Tulkarem, and accused Israel carrying out deliberate provocations to undermine the Palestinian efforts to maintain calm.  

The US called on the Israelis and Palestinians to “show restraint”, and denounced what was described as “violence of both sides”.
