According to an investigation made by the Israeli military, an Israeli lieutenant was convicted, Thursday, of beating a fellow soldier and sentenced to a demotion and 21 days of community service. The Palestine News Network reported that the abuse was discovered in the summer of 2009, during a hazing ceremony for new soldiers. At that time, the Israeli military held an internal investigation.
After the investigation was concluded, the army decided to dissolve the squadron. In addition, some soldiers, who took part in the hazing ceremony, were criminally charged and received jail sentences.
However, the deputy commander, a Lieutenant, was only charged with conduct unbecoming an officer, and was able to use a plea bargain to lessen his sentence, PNN reported.
The lieutenant was found to have punched at least one soldier in the ribs and spraining his arm. But army officials ruled that this assault was a ‘non-criminal’ offense.
