Dr. Aziz Dweik, head of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), stated Saturday that he hopes that he would be able to accompany President Mahmoud Abbas in his first visit to Gaza following several years of internal divisions between Fateh and Hamas. Dweik, head of the Hamas Change and Reform Parliamentary Bloc, demanded all Legislative Council members, and Hamas leaders in Gaza, to welcome Abbas the moment he enters coastal region.
He added that all efforts must be conducted to ensure unity among all Palestinians and their political factions.
Dweik stated that this visit must be positively invested in order to end the internal rifts, adding that he will be holding a meeting with Abbas before he heads to Gaza.
Hamas spokesperson, Fawzi Barhoum, demanded the Fateh movement of Mahmoud Abbas to create what he called “a positive atmosphere” in future Fateh-Hamas talks, adding that Hamas is serious about unity and ending internal rifts.
On Friday, Barhoum said that Abbas must release all political prisoners in the West Bank, and must allow the PLC to hold a meeting in order to approve the recent developments.
He called for stopping what he described as ‘media campaigns against the Hamas movement’.
