Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano, accepted on Tuesday the official documents of Palestinian Ambassador, Sabri Atiyya, as part of the Italian decision to upgrade the status of the Palestinian mission in the country. Last May, Napolitano visited the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, and declared in a press conference that his country will upgrade the status of the Palestinian representative office in the country to the level of a delegation.

He also declared that the head of the Palestinian representative office, aka delegation, will be granted the full status of an ambassador.

The Italian President also stated that this decision comes as a proof of the Italian support to the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people, and the Italian commitment to comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
