“Two prisoners had their legs amputated due to handcuff injuries,’ says a doctor at an Israeli prison facility, who describes deplorable conditions and violations of medical ethics and the law in a letter to ministers, attorney general” – Haaretz

It said that, in a letter that was delivered to the Israeli Defense Minister, the Minister of Health, and the Legal Advisor of the Israeli government, the physician said that, just this week, two Palestinian detainees had their legs amputated because of the shackles digging into their bones and skin, and added that this became a routine occurrence.

The physician, who worked at a field hospital set up at the Sde Teiman detention center to hold Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip, said the detainees are forced to eat grass, are defecating in dirty diapers,  and their hands are constantly tied, facing conditions that violate international law and medical ethics.

According to Haaretz, the doctor said in his letter to government ministers and the attorney general that he is facing “serious ethical dilemmas,” and warning them that “operations in the facility do not comply  with a single section among those dealing with health in the Incarceration of Unlawful Combatants Law.”

The doctor stated that the detainees are always blindfolded, cuffed, and fed through a straw, and added that the detainees, even the young and the healthy, are losing weight after just a week or two of hospitalization, and yet, the “hospital doesn’t receive the regular supplies of medicine and medical equipment.”
