Israeli forces shot and killed a Birzeit University student on Sunday, during a settler attack in the village of Deir Jarir, east of Ramallah in the central occupied West Bank.
In a statement, the Palestinian Health Ministry announced the death of the young man Baraa Khairi Ali Maali (20 years old) after he was shot by Israeli forces.
Fathi Hamdan, the head of the Deir Jarir village council, told the WAFA News Agency that the young man was killed by occupation forces in after armed settlers invaded the village.
Hamdan added that a group of armed paramilitary colonizers stormed the outskirts of the village, under army protection. Soldiers and settlers opened fire at citizens who confronted the incursion, shooting Maali in the chest with live ammunition.
The seriously wounded young man was transported to the hospital in Silwad town, before being transferred to the Palestine Medical Complex due to the seriousness of his condition; he was later pronounced dead from his wounds.
In a statement, the army claimed that “during the forces’ activity, a ‘saboteur’ threw rocks at the force, which responded with precise gunfire to neutralize the threat and killed him.”
The student movement at Birzeit University announced a general strike Monday, in mourning and in protest against the Israeli policy of killing Palestinian civilians.
