In an urgent letter to the Security Council in regards to the declaration of famine in Gaza, the State of Palestine affirmed on Saturday:
Saturday August 23rd marks day 687 of Israel’s ongoing slaughter of Palestinian men, women and children in the northern, central and southern Gaza Strip. A day after the official declaration of famine by the United Nations, Israel continues to block food, fuel, medical supplies and other necessities from entering the besieged and imprisoned Gaza Strip. At the same time, Israeli forces have launched a ground assault in eastern Gaza City, destroying over 500 homes over the past week in a systematic, block-by-block operation in which they plant explosives and destroy the homes a block at a time.
In this way, the Israeli military is continuing to carry out its stated agenda of flattening Gaza’s neighborhoods, towns and cities, as they previously did in Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, as well as in Rafah, in southern Gaza.
On Saturday, day 687, of the genocide, Israeli forces have killed 70 Palestinians since dawn. This includes 22 aid seekers, killed by Israeli soldiers and US mercenaries while trying to obtain food for their families. In addition, 8 Palestinians died of starvation over the past 24 hours.
Israeli forces killed Palestine TV cameraman, Khaled Al-Madhoun, targeting him for assassination on Saturday, after a week of publishing false claims about Khaled – similar to those made against journalist Anas Al-Sharif, who Israel targeted for assassination last week due to his well-researched and well-documented journalism.
The media coalition in Gaza said that Al-Madhoun gave his life carrying his camera as a witness to the truth and a transmitter of the suffering of his people, to confirm that the voice of the Palestinian media will not be broken, and that the word and image will remain on the first front line in defense of truth and freedom.
Also on Saturday, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced that more than 15,600 people in Gaza, including 3,800 children, are in urgent need of medical evacuation to receive special care.
Ghebreyesus touched on the situation in the Gaza Strip, which is being subjected to an ongoing Israeli war of extermination and starvation.
He called for facilitating the delivery of aid in order to save lives and provide life-saving care, renewing his call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation forces have launched an aggression on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the killing of 62,622 citizens, the majority of whom were children and women, and the injury of 157,673 others, in an incomplete toll, as a number of victims are still under the rubble and on the roads, and ambulance and rescue crews are unable to reach them.
