Thursday September 18th was the deadline set by the General Assembly for Israel to end its occupation of the territory of the State of Palestine. But the date passed with no further action by the United Nations to enforce their order from one year ago.

The United Nations Human Rights Office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory said that Thursday was the deadline set by the United Nations General Assembly last year for Israel to comply with the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on ending the ongoing illegal Israeli presence in the Palestinian Territory.

The office added: “Instead, we are witnessing more massacres, the destruction of infrastructure, the forced displacement of Palestinians, and the consolidation of land annexation”.

The Human Rights Office stressed the need for states to act now to end violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, and to pressure Israel to withdraw immediately and completely from the occupied Palestinian territories.

In its advisory opinion issued in July 2024, the International Court of Justice concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal and that it has an obligation to end its illegal presence as quickly as possible.

This came in response to the General Assembly’s request for the Court to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.

But in the year since then, Israel has made no move to end its occupation of Palestine, instead pushing thousands of Palestinians out of their homes in the West Bank, and destroying hundreds of thousands of Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip, with Israeli leaders vowing to push the Palestinian population out of Gaza completely or exterminate them.
