The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees “UNRWA” said today, Wednesday, that hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced people in the Gaza Strip are struggling to find safe shelter in preparation for the approaching cold weather, in light of the repercussions of the war of extermination launched by Israel against the Gaza Strip for the past two years.
“The displaced have no choice but to set up primitive tents,” added the UN Agency, noting that “more shelter materials are still needed.”
The agency pointed out that more than 79,000 displaced people live in 85 shelters run by UNRWA in the Gaza Strip, amid humanitarian conditions that are getting worse as winter approaches.
The spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, warned last night that displaced Palestinian families in Gaza face the risk of flooding inside poor shelters, stressing that the population is “highly at risk” in light of the bad weather conditions, and that the ongoing Israeli restrictions hinder the entry of vital aid and impede the work of relief organizations.
Yesterday, a low pressure system accompanied by heavy rains caused hundreds of tents of displaced people to sink in the Al-Mawasi area in the city of Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, amid warnings of a humanitarian disaster.
