The Union of Palestinian Teachers may go back to strike if the government does not pay their overdue salaries, a senior union official told Palestine News Network on Wednesday.

Anis Darwish, who expressed worries that the government may not live to its commitment to pay the salaries, said the union may take measures such as obstructing the second midterm semester, which will start in few days.

Darwish said if the government pays the salaries on time there will be no strike noting that if there will be a strike it will include all school stages, including high school students.

If restarted, the strike will delay the graduation of high school students, which will cause them to loose the chance to join universities and colleges.

The teachers resumed work ending a three-month strike after the Ministry of Education paid a one-month salary after Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh received pledges from Qatar to pay the salaries of the education sector.

The government is unable to pay the salaries of over 165 thousand Palestinian state employees as a result of the economic blockade imposed by the United States, European Union and Israel which prevents the flow of funds to the Palestinian Government.

The blockade has been imposed following Hamas’ formation of the Palestinian government after winning an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary elections held in January of 2006.
