The Lebanese daily A-Safeer reported on Monday that the Lebanese intelligence service has uncovered a spy network working for Israel since 1990.
The spy network network, according to the report, was exposed in a complex operation carried out at dawn.
Following the assassination of Mahmoud Al Majdoub, the secretary general of the Islamic Jihad, and his brother Nidal, by a car bomb in Lebanon last month, the Lebanese intelligence launched an operation to uncover the spy cell behind the attack.
The Israeli daily Haaretz reported online that a senior Lebanese intelligence source predicted that the interrogation of suspects could lead to the exposure of Lebanese and Palestinian agents working for Israel in Lebanon.
The source added that it is possible those collaborators could be responsible for a series of attacks, bombings and assassinations in Lebanon.
The Lebanese intelligence identified the car used in the assassination of Al Majdoub as owned by a retired policeman identified as Mahmoud Qassem Rafa, 59.
Security agents in Lebanon began inspecting Rafa after his financial situation radically improved several months ago.
During interrogation, Rafa confessed to his involvement in the assassination and admitted being involved in the killing of a senior member of the Lebanon-based Hizbollah party identified as Ali Salah.
The Lebanese intelligence source added that the investigation now focuses on the source of the explosives used in the assassination of Al Majdoub and his associates, some of whom already managed to flee the country.
