Khaled Mashaal, chief o f the politburo of Hamas arrived in Cairo on
Thursday for talks with Egyptian officials, political sources reported.
Khaled who heads a delegation of senior Hamas officials will discuss several issues in Cairo including the formation of the national unity government.
The source added that the delegation will also discuss the latest Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip and the prisoners’ swap deal they proposed to release the Israeli soldier captured in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas has demanded that Israel release 1400 of Palestinian prisoners including all women and children, for the release of Gilad Shalit who was captured in last June, by a group of Palestinian resistance fighters from a military base in south of the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Palestinian and Israeli officials met to prepare for a possible summit meeting that will join the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Dr. Saeb Ereikat, chief Palestinian negotiator who met with the chair of the Israeli Prime Minister’s advisors Yoram Turbowicz and Shalom Turjeman, described the meeting as deep, serious and positive.
It is not clear when the meeting will be held, probably, both are waiting for an American signal, similar that one given for the advisors to meet.
