The European Union envoy for peace in the Middle East, Miguel Moratinos, and Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht will meet with the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Palestinian National Unity Government, Dr. Ziad Abu Amr, soon.
Palestinian Minister of information Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi announced this on Wednesday. This will be the first diplomatic meeting between the Europeans and the Palestinian government since the formation of the unity government.
Palestinian observers said this move could create a crack in the year long economic and political boycott of the Palestinian government. The European Union followed the lead of the United States in boycotting the previous Palestinian government which comprised of Hamas members and affiliates only.
Dr. Abu Amr took over his post succeeding Dr. Mahoud Azzahar of Hamas, following the Palestinian agreement to form a National unity government. Palestinian officials told IMEMC that there are 27 European countries who expressed readiness to recognize the newly formed National Unity Government in Palestine.
