The European Campaign to end the Siege on Gaza denounced recent statements made by UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, in which he called for preventing the Freedom Flotilla 2 from heading to Gaza to deliver humanitarian supplies. The Freedom Flotilla 2 will be sailing to Gaza in June to deliver essential medical and humanitarian supplies, and to break the illegal Israeli siege on the coastal region.
Ki-moon issued an official letter calling on Mediterranean countries that have citizens boarding the flotilla, to practice pressure on their citizens, and to stop the ships before they set sail to the Gaza Strip.
He believes that stopping the flotilla will help in avoiding potential clashes between the non-armed peace activists and the Israeli army, similar to last year’s Israeli attack against the Freedom Flotilla while it was in international water. The attack led to the death of nine Turkish peace activists.
The European Campaign said that it was surprised by the statements of the UN Chief, especially since the UN Security Council issued resolutions in 2008 and 2009 demanding Israel to lift its deadly siege that led to the death of more than 300 Palestinians who needed urgent and specialized medical care.
The Campaign stated in an official release that its flotilla is civil and humanitarian, and that the international law requires action against the illegal siege.
