Nabil Abu Rodeina, spokesperson to the Palestinian President, stated Thursday evening [June 20 2013] that the newly appointed Palestinian Prime Minister, Dr. Rami Hamdallah, has officially submitted his resignation.Abu Rodeina added that the president will be looking into the resignation, a move that is more of a formality.
Hamdallah was appointed to his post by president Abbas, and was officially sworn-in at the beginning of this month replacing the resigned Prime Minister, Dr. Salaam Fayyad.
Hamdallah has a PDH in Applied Linguistics from a British University, and was the head of the An-Najah University in Nablus.
The Palestine News Network (PNN) quoted Palestinian political analyst, Hani Masri, stating that the reason behind the resignation was likely based on the current formation, and the fact that two deputy Prime Ministers have also been appointed.
Masri told the Russia Today news agency that this issue could lead conflict in responsibilities especially since one of the deputy PM’s is in charge of the economic file, while the other is in charge of the political file.
Russia Today added that Hamdallah preferred to quickly resign from his post, as he did not approve of the government formation.
The two appointed deputy Prime Ministers are Mohammad Mustafa and Ziyad Abu Amro.
Israeli Ynet News claimed that Hamdallah had serious differences with his deputies.
The government of Hamdallah only held two sessions, the first on June 11 followed by protests against it due high living costs and the lack of salaries.
It is worth mentioning that, a few days ago, Hamdallah visited occupied Jerusalem, and met with officials of a number of Palestinian institutions in the city.
