Palestinian lawmakers said Saturday that parliament will delay for at least several days a planned vote on an election law. The election law is seen crucial to holding the July 17 legislative elections on time.
‘Tomorrow there will be no meeting,’ but there is talk about holding it between Monday and Thursday, legislator Hanan Ashrawi said, adding that it would still possible to hold elections on time despite the delayed vote.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has repeatedly declared intention to hold the vote on time, Hamas, who is becoming increasingly suspicious of PA intentions towards holding legislative elections on time, has warned that if the PA doesn’t respect its promises and fails to hold the vote on time, Hamas will reconsider its commitments delivered in exchange, including the cease-fire ones.

On Friday, sources close to the Fatah movement said that the movement leaders were considering delaying legislative elections, to allow the movement crucially needed time to unit, reform and present tangible achievements to the public.
