The Israeli Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom is expected in Mauritania on Tuesday in order to present the ‘Road Plan’ as Israeli calls it, which aims to expand the Israeli relations with Arab countries.
Shalom in slated to meet with the Mauritanian president Maaouiya Ould Taya, to present the Israeli plan, which was presented to the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak during their latest Cairo meeting.
Shalom also plans to visit a medical center for caner treatment established by Israel in Mauritania.
Meanwhile, thousand of Mauritanian student protested against Shalom’s visit, and chanted slogans against the Israeli operations in the Palestinian territories and against diplomatic ties with Israel; Mauritanian police fired gas bombs at the protestors.
Hundreds of residents and members of the Islamic apposition in Mauritania protested on Monday in front of the ministry of interior against Shalom’s visit; the protest ended peacefully.
