Dr. Moawiya Hassanen, head of the Emergency unit at the Palestinian Ministry of Health, reported on Sunday night that two residents were killed and at least four were injured when an Israeli helicopter gunship fired one missile at a car in Al Zaytoun neighborhood, east of Gaza.
Dr. Hassanen stated that the two residents were identified as Adnan Bustan, 28, and Jihad Al Sawafeery.
"The missile directly hit the car, killing the two residents, and injuring four bystanders," Dr. Hassanen said. "The bodies of the killed residents were severely mutilated."
One of the injured residents suffered severe wounds.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian security source said that the two residents were members of the Al Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad.
The Islamic Jihad confirmed the report and stated that Bustan was head of the "engineering and manufacturing unit", and that he supplied other armed factions in the Gaza Strip with homemade shells.
The Al Quds Brigades, the military wing of the movement, vowed fierce retaliation.
"We instructed all of our fighters in the West Bank and Gaza to strike the enemy," a statement released by the brigades reads. "Our retaliation knows no borders [n]or limits."
The Israeli army confirmed carrying out the assassination. An Israeli military source reported that the assassination came in retaliation to the homemade shell which the group fired at Kibbutz Carmia, near the Gaza Strip, on Friday.
One infant and his pregnant mother were injured in the Qassam strike.
After midnight on Sunday night, three Palestinians were assassinated and five were injured in a military strike which targeted a sports club and a vehicle, in Tal Al Hawa neighborhood, south of Gaza city.
The club is run by the Al Aqsa Brigades, the military wing of Fateh movement.
