The Political profile of the Palestinian National Unity Government sets a solid base for peace in the region, Palestinian Minister of Information Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi told the German Representative to the Palestinian Authority Mr. Joerg Ranau, in their meeting in Al-Biereh on Thursday.

Barghouthi, who is also the spokesman of the Palestinian government, added the the Government calls for establishing a solid cease-fire with Israel. However he accused the latter of obstructing such an initiative with ongoing attacks in several parts of Palestine.

He called on Germany, who is heading the European Union, not to boycott the current Palestinian Government as it represents 96 per cent of the Palestinian people. Barghouthi handed Ranau, who is the first European representative to meet with him, a translated copy of the Political profile of the Palestinian government stressing that the Israeli misinterpretations of this profile are inaccurate.

Israel continues to refuse to recognize the Palestinian government and claims that there is no Palestinian partner for peace, demanding that the Palestinian Government honor the previous agreements signed between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and the PLO- to denounce violence and recognize Israel.

The Makkah agreement, upon which the Palestinian Government was formed, states that the government should recognize and honor the previously signed agreements with Israel. Later on Thursday, Barghouthi stated that there is no Israeli partner for peace and said that the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is not strong enough to re-launch peace talks with the Palestinians.

He added that the Israeli attacks against the Palestinian population in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are attempts to sabotage the efforts of the Palestinian Authority to restore calm and security in the Palestinian areas, and accused Israel of avoiding addressing the Arab Initiative for peace.

The Arab countries decided in their latest summit two weeks ago to re-launch the Arab Peace Initiative which offers Israel full recognition and normal relations with all the Arab Countries in exchange of a full withdrawal from the land occupied in 1967 and a fair solution to the Palestinian refugees’ problem, who have been in Diaspora for 59 years.
