The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recalled the Representative of Australia to Palestine, Thomas Wilson, on Sunday, in protest against remarks made by Attorney-General of Australia, George Brandis, in which he publicly called for disregarding East Jerusalem as an occupied territory.WAFA reports that, during a press conference in Ramallah, Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki expressed worries over the remarks, which stand in contrast with all international resolutions and the international community’s position on Jerusalem.
The city was taken in 1967 and remains a part of the internationally recognized Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Al-Maliki called on the Australia Government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide an official clarification on their announced position towards occupied East Jerusalem, as he considers the remarks to be an “indicator to Australia’s change of policy” that has repeatedly surfaced, in various instances, over the past few months.
