EU foreign policy chief Frederica Mogherini is calling on Israel and Palestine to resume peace talks, saying the situation on the ground is ‘unsustainable.’Mogherini spoke out on the issue after a rocket was fired from Gaza into southern Israel and Israeli forces launched a number of airstrikes into the Gaza Strip.

Mogherini said the situation on the ground is not sustainable and it is ‘an illusion to think the status quo is an option.’

Last week, Mogherini visited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leaders to talk about the need for positive steps towards peace, saying that ‘if we don’t have positive steps, we will have negative steps.’ She also urged Palestinian Authority leaders and Hamas to start a ‘national reconciliation process.’

Mogherini has been calling for a two-state solution of Israel and Palestine based on the 1967 borders and a renewal of the peace talks that fell apart in 2014.
