The death of a Palestinian detainee in Israeli prison, was announced, on Tuesday, the fifth detainee to die in occupation prisons since October 7, 2023.
The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) announced, on Tuesday, that another Palestinian detainee died in the Israeli “Megiddo” prison.
It was reported that the detainee, Abdul-Rahman Ahmad Mohammad Mer’ey , 33, died on Monday, in the Israeli Megiddo prison, after what the groups called a “premeditated assassination”.
The occupation prison authorities only revealed his identity to his lawyer on Tuesday and claimed that an autopsy would be performed on the body.
Mer’ey, a married father of four was a citizen of Qarawat Bani Hassan, northwest of Salfit in the central occupied West Bank. It was added that his brother, Muhammad, was killed by the Israeli forces in 2005.
Five Palestinian detainees, including Mer’ey, have died in Israeli prisons since the beginning of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, and 242 have died since the Israeli state occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967.
On October 23, the Palestinian administrative detainee, Omar Hamza Hassan Daraghma, 58, from Tubas, died in the “Megiddo” prison in Israel. He was abducted just two weeks earlier by Israeli forces, on October 9, 2023.
Less than 24 hours later, on October 24, 2023, a second detainee, Arafat Yasser Hamdan, 25, from Beit Sira, west of Ramallah, died in the “Ofer” detention center, near Ramallah in the central West Bank, just 2 days after he was abducted.
On November 6, 2023, the occupation announced the death of another Palestinian detainee, Majed Ahmed Zaqoul, 32.
Reports said that the young man, from the Jabalia refugee camp, in northern Gaza, had died 10 days prior to the announcement of his death.
An unknown detainee from the Gaza Strip was the fourth to die in Israeli prison since October 7, 2023, however the identity of the detainee is unknown.
With regards to the Israeli “Ofer” prison, the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs reported, on Tuesday, that, “the Israeli occupation has pursued a policy of abuse and torture against our prisoners in prisons, the frequency of which is increasing day after day, deliberately adopting a system of isolating prisoners from the outside world, cutting off communications from them, preventing visits from their families.”
It is important to note that the PPS said last week that the Palestinian detainees in the Israeli “Megiddo” prison are being tortured and deprived of necessities, adding that, according to the testimonies of released prisoners, prison authorities physically and verbally abuse the Palestinian detainees.
