The Arab League has called for international protection for Palestinian journalists facing deadly violations and crimes committed by Israeli occupation forces. These crimes have resulted in the deaths of approximately 209 journalists during the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Additionally, Israeli authorities have imposed strict security measures restricting press freedom, including a ban on foreign media access to the region—an act that blatantly violates international laws.

In a statement issued to mark World Press Freedom Day—observed annually on May 3 following a 1993 UN General Assembly resolution and a recommendation from UNESCO’s General Conference—the Arab League emphasized the significance of honoring journalists who make tremendous sacrifices in pursuit of truth and freedom of expression, often under challenging and dangerous conditions worldwide.

Press Freedom and Democratic Societies

Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, underscored the critical role of independent journalism in fostering democratic societies and enhancing public awareness.

He stressed the need for a balanced approach, ensuring adherence to professional ethics and media codes of honor, while safeguarding freedom of expression and access to information—free from misinformation and restrictions.

Khattabi noted that this year’s World Press Freedom Day comes at an exceptional moment, as Israel’s aggressive war on Gaza continues alongside daily assaults in other occupied Palestinian territories.

These violations have led to thousands of civilian casualties, including children and women, while a total blockade prevents the entry of humanitarian aid.

Safeguarding Journalists in Conflict Zones

The ambassador highlighted the vital role of credible journalism in countering false Israeli narratives and called for urgent action through international and regional organizations to modernize legal frameworks that ensure adequate protection for journalists working in conflict zones.

He stressed the importance of enabling media professionals to operate in a safe environment, preserving both their physical and psychological well-being.

The Arab League’s appeal reinforces the global urgency of defending press freedom and ensuring journalists can report without fear or obstruction, particularly in regions affected by war and occupation.
