(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 872nd day.)

A father and his daughter were killed in an Israeli drone attack in central Khan Younis early on Saturday; in a separate attack, another person was killed and a young girl wounded.

Since the “ceasefire” began on October 11, Israel has killed at least 640 Palestinians. Over 1,707 have been injured. Death toll figures are tentative.

Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 1,620 times (as of Feb. 1, 2026). More statistics below.

WAR ON IRAN NEWS & HEADLINES:

Why is If Americans Knew covering the war on Iran? It can not be overemphasized that Israel has been the impetus behind US policies and actions vis-a-vis Iran for years. This is especially true right now, under Donald Trump. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the US to attack Iran for decades.

The American people have made clear that they do not want to go to war with Iran, but Israel partisans and the Israel lobby use their massive political clout to bring about whatever is beneficial to Israel – including putting the US military in harm’s way. For more background on Israel’s role in American wars, watch IAK’s short film, “The Israeli Hit List.”

Death toll (all numbers are tentative):

  • Six US troops have been killed and 18 more have been “seriously wounded” since Saturday, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).
  • In Israel, 13 people have been killed and 834 injured, the majority with minor injuries.
  • In Iran, 1,332 people have reportedly been killed since the conflict began, state media says (other sources put the number somewhat lower).
  • In Lebanon, at least 394 people have been killed.
  • In other Arab states, at least 13 people have been killed (an earlier report of 25 was a mistake. We apologize).

IRAN:

Iran Red Crescent says 6,668 civilian sites targeted in US-Israeli attacks: According to the statement, 5,535 residential buildings, 1,041 commercial units, 14 health centers, 65 schools, and 13 facilities affiliated with the Red Crescent were among the locations hit.

In a social media post, Iranian political commentator Kev Joon called the scene “apocalyptic,” adding, “I have never seen something like this. These are gutters and streams that run the sides of streets on almost every street and alley in Tehran. They are destroying a city in ways we haven’t witnessed before.”

“What is happening tonight is that US and Israel are targeting oil depots and desalination plants,” said Joon. “These aren’t military targets. They’re the infrastructure of everyday life. This isn’t a liberatory war. It’s an attempt to break the backs of Iranian people.”

Offer from Iran’s president to not attack neighbors provokes internal backlash: The surprise offer by the president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, to not attack neighboring countries so long as their airspace and US bases within their territories are not used to attack Iran has provoked a storm inside the country as the military appeared to contradict him, if not outright overrule him. There were also calls for a new supreme leader to be installed as quickly as possible, as a means of marginalizing the president. Trump interpreted the move by Pezeshkian to be “surrendering to Iran’s neighbors.”

Statement from Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghshi (for an analysis of this declaration, go here):

U.S./TRUMP ADMINISTRATION:

Ha’aretz: Trump Says Iran bombed the girls’ schoolIn various statements on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump denied claims that a U.S. strike had hit a girls’ school in Iran early in the war, or that Russia was providing Iran with intelligence, but was confident of U.S. success in the war: ‘we’ve decimated their whole evil empire.’ Answering a question about the girls’ school bombing, Trump said, “Based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran. They are very inaccurate with their munitions.” Congressman Randy Fine echoed that sentiment.

Trump refuses to give details on sending troops to Iran: The US president says he refuses to disclose the conditions for sending ground troops into Iran.

U.S. weighs sending special forces to seize Iran’s nuclear stockpile: Any operation to seize the material would likely require U.S. or Israeli troops on Iranian soil, navigating heavily fortified underground facilities in the middle of a war. It remains unclear whether it would be an American, Israeli or joint mission. It would likely only take place after both countries are confident Iran’s military can no longer mount a serious threat to the forces involved.

ISRAEL:

US approves $151.8M (actually $660M) weapons sale to Israel, waiving congressional review: “The Secretary of State has determined and provided detailed justification that an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale to the Government of Israel,” the agency said, waiving the congressional review requirements under Section 36(b) of the Arms Export Control Act.

NYTimes reveals that the $151.8M package is not the full story: an additional $500M in bombs are also going to Israel without Congressional oversight: The State Department did not mention these details in the announcement, but two current U.S. officials and a former, Josh Paul, who worked on weapons transfers at the State Department, said they were part of the emergency sale. The current officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive arms transactions. The total value of the sale is nearly $660 million.

*NOTE: The US has made a number of such sales lately, bypassing congressional oversight. Before this sale, Trump had already approved $12 billion in weapons sales to Israel in his second term, with significant portions bypassing standard congressional review processes. Biden also invoked emergency authority for at least $250 million in arms sales to Israel, and approved more than 100 separate, smaller arms sales to Israel, each of which was below the threshold for public notification, but together could have been worth $10 billion.

LEBANON & THE MIDDLE EAST:

55 killed in Israeli airstrikes on eastern Lebanon: At least 55 people were killed and 40 injured in Israeli airstrikes on eastern Lebanon, the Lebanese Health Ministry said Saturday. The deaths included at least three Lebanese army soldiers. For more details, see “Israel kills dozens in Lebanon after failed mission to find pilot’s remains” below.

Threats to water supply and food inflation stalk Gulf states: Gulf countries are shutting down oil and gas production as a result of the US-Israeli war on Iran, but it’s not just their energy infrastructure that is currently held hostage to Iran’s retaliatory missiles and drones: food and water are, too.

Colonizers* Kill a Palestinian, Critically Injure His Brother in Masafer Yatta

Illegal Israeli colonizers killed a Palestinian man, 28-year-old Amir Mohammad Shanaran, and critically injured his brother on Saturday, during an attack in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank.

Witnesses said settlers brought cattle and sheep to graze on privately owned Palestinian land close to village homes. Palestinians attempted to drive the herd away, according to testimonies. A settler wearing an Israel military uniform then reportedly opened fire toward the Palestinians, wounding the two brothers.

Since the beginning of the Israeli military aggression against the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, occupation forces and settlers have killed 1122 Palestinian citizens in the occupied West Bank, including 232 children and 24 women.

*NOTE: In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements. Israeli settlers are sometimes referred to as “colonizers.”

ISRAEL NEWS & HEADLINES:

(Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.)

An Israeli operation in eastern Lebanon to locate the remains of a famous IDF pilot ended in failure overnight, when the commandos were caught in a gunfight with Hezbollah and local residents, leading Israeli jets to pummel the area with airstrikes that killed dozens of people.

The fighting left three Lebanese soldiers and 41 residents of the Bekaa valley dead, according to the Lebanese army and ministry of health. No injuries were reported among the Israeli soldiers (read the backstory and full incident here).
