On the political level, a recent report from the Wall Street Journal indicated that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is improbable before President Joe Biden’s term concludes in January.

U.S. officials have pointed to considerable challenges, such as Israel’s insistence on a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt, as well as the details surrounding the exchange of Israeli captives for Palestinian detainees.

Ongoing talks, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, have yet to yield a conclusive outcome due to the intricate nature of the situation.

While the U.S. administration is actively pursuing a resolution, there is a prevailing sense of skepticism among officials.

Furthermore, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has postponed a planned visit to Tel Aviv due to escalating confrontations between the Israeli army and Hezbollah on the Lebanese border, and what was described as significant American concerns about the potential for these confrontations to escalate into a full-scale war.

In related news, a report by Israeli Walla News, citing Israeli officials, stated that Austin had postponed the visit, which was initially scheduled for early next week.

However, the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) stated on Thursday evening, “We have not announced any visit by the Defense Secretary to Israel, and we have no comment on reports of its postponement.”

The Walla report also noted that Washington has recently been sending messages to both Israel and Hezbollah, “publicly and privately,” emphasizing the need to de-escalate the situation.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that a ceasefire in Gaza is possible and necessary. This statement underscores the ongoing efforts and hopes for resolving the conflict, despite the significant challenges and complexities involved.

Deputy Executive Director for Humanitarian Action and Supply Operations at UNICEF, Ted Chaibanm, has called for an immediate ceasefire to protect children in Gaza and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.

In a press statement on Thursday night, Chaiban confirmed that more than 14,000 children have been killed in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, emphasizing the importance of a political solution that ensures children’s rights.

He explained that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening, with the number of displaced people rising to 1.9 million. Meanwhile, the number of aid trucks entering Gaza has decreased from 100 trucks per day in August to just 15 trucks in September, exacerbating the suffering of the citizens.

Israel has now killed at least 41,272 people, including 16,673 children, 11,269 women, 888 medical staff, 203 UNRWA workers, and 172 journalists, and injured more than 95,551, the majority of whom are children, women, and elderly, since the beginning of the aggression on the coastal enclave on October 7, 2023.

The British Lancet Medical Journal and other experts estimate the death toll in Gaza is much higher and could be above 200,000 when counting both direct and indirect deaths related to the Israeli war on Gaza.
