Israeli forces shot five Palestinian students and injured others, on Tuesday morning, after storming the Birzeit University campus, north of Ramallah in the central West Bank.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that its ambulance crews transported 11 Palestinians to the hospital after suffering various injuries.

The PRCS added that 5 students were shot with live ammunition, 4 sustained inhalation injuries, while 2 others suffered injuries as a result of falling while running during the attack.

According to the public relations officer at Birzeit University, Nirdin Al-Mimi, occupation forces stormed the University campus, destroying the main gate and opened fire with live rounds, tear gas canisters, and concussion grenades towards students.

Al-Mimi added that at least 8,000 students were on campus when several Israeli soldiers invaded a number of buildings and confiscated equipment belonging to the student movement.

Media sources reported that the army detained the Vice President of the University, Assem Khalil, and chased university students.

In a press conference held after the army withdrawal, the President of Birzeit University, Talal Shahwan, said that the army attack against the university is in contravention of human rights law and international law.

The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education denounced the incursion and called for the protection of institutions for higher learning.
