Early Tuesday morning, several Palestinians sustained injuries following an invasion by Israeli forces and colonizers in the Joseph’s Tomb area in the eastern part of Nablus, in the occupied West Bank’s northern part.
Amid Ahmad, Director of the Red Crescent’s Emergency Department in Nablus, said that paramedics treated one individual for burns, another for injuries caused by falling from a high place, and several others for inhaling toxic gas.
Ahmad added that among them was a 60-year-old man; all were transferred to hospital for medical care.
Local sources indicated that Israeli military vehicles invaded the eastern area of the city through the Hawara, Awarta, and Beit Furik military roadblocks.
The invasion was accompanied by heavy deployment of toxic and stun gas to secure the arrival of colonizers performing Talmudic rituals at the site.
Joseph Jews, Muslims, Christians, and Samaritans revere the patriarch alike, however, the Israeli military allows Jews to visit as part of organized visits, despite the site being in Area A where the PA has full control and prohibits Muslims from worshiping at the site.
Ultra-orthodox and nationalist Jews constantly try to visit the shrine without approval, as many Jews believe the tomb to be the final resting place of the biblical figure in the Old Testament.
Palestinians believe that Joseph’s Tomb is the funerary monument to Sheikh Yousif Dweikat, a local religious figure.
The site commonly referred to as “Joseph’s Tomb” is a relatively recent structure dating back to the Ottoman period. Erected in 1904, it was dedicated to Sheikh Yousef Dweikat, a revered Islamic scholar known for teaching in the Nablus area.
Following his passing, Ottoman officials honored his legacy by establishing a shrine bearing his name.
For generations, Palestinian villagers, particularly among Sufi communities, considered the shrine a sacred place for spiritual devotion. The Tomb is officially registered with the Palestinian Islamic Waqf and Endowment Department.
