Senior Palestinian leader and Member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, stated on Sunday, that press freedoms are an integral part of public freedoms.
Dr. Ashrawi’s remarks came on the International Day of Journalists, set by a United Nations’ committee, back in 1993.
In her remarks, she referred to the Israeli occupation’s continued attacks on journalists and media crews, across Palestine.
PLO official believed that such media work must not be hindered in any way, and that Israel must be held responsible for all attacks on Palestinian journalists.
Over the years, hundreds of Palestinian journalists have been wounded, arrested and even killed by Israeli troops, throughout the occupied Palestinian territories.
Meanwhile, Ashrawi, a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause, was quoted as saying that Palestinians should have a unified media message to deliver to the outside world.
“A given Palestinian media message should be based on international law and international humanitarian law. Palestinian justice is crystal clear, but it requires deliberate media work”, she said.
