The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has warmly welcomed the announcement by Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, declaring Belgium’s intention to formally recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Ministry described this decision as a principled and courageous step aligned with international law, relevant UN resolutions, and the global consensus supporting the two-state solution as a pathway to just and lasting peace.
This recognition, the Ministry emphasized, reflects Belgium’s commitment to upholding human rights and international humanitarian law amid the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The recognition also sends a clear message of solidarity with the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and sovereignty.
In light of Belgium’s announcement, the Ministry urged all countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to act swiftly and decisively.
It called on the international community to intensify efforts to halt Israel’s ongoing crimes, including genocide, forced displacement, starvation tactics, and illegal annexation, and to open a genuine political horizon for resolving the conflict.
The Ministry reiterated that recognition of Palestinian statehood is not merely symbolic, but a legal and moral imperative.
It is a necessary step toward ending the Israeli occupation, restoring Palestinian rights, and advancing a comprehensive and enforceable peace based on justice, accountability, and international law, the Ministry added.
