A Palestinian administrative detainee died, on Monday, in an Israeli prison, after being in custody for two weeks.
According to the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, Omar Hamza Hassan Daraghmeh, 58, from Tubas, died in the Megiddo Prison in Israel.
The joint statement said that Daraghmeh, a leader with the Hamas resistance movement, and his son were abducted by Israeli forces on October 9, 2023, and transferred to Administrative Detention for a period of six months.
It added that during a court session held on Monday, Daraghmeh’s lawyer, Ashraf Abu Sneineh, inquired about his health, to which he replied that he was in good health.
The circumstances surrounding Daraghmeh’s death is unclear, as a statement by the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) did not offer any definitive cause of death.
The IPS stated that “One of the detainees in Megiddo Prison felt unwell and went to the prison clinic to undergo examinations.”
The statement continued, “While he was receiving treatment at the clinic, an ambulance was called, which arrived and confirmed his death immediately.”
The Prison Service claimed that it would carry out an investigation into the unexpected death of the detainee.
