The Palestinian Detainees Committee has confirmed, Sunday, the death of a detainee from the Negev shortly after he was moved from the Eshil Israeli prison to an Israeli hospital.
The Committee stated that the detainee Jom’a Abu Ghneima, 26, was taken prisoner in January 2024, before he was moved to an interrogation facility.
It added that Jom’a was moved from his solitary confinement cell to an Israeli hospital just five days earlier, and was pronounced dead, Sunday.
Israel, due to its policies of torture and the imposing of dire living conditions on the detainees and denying them access to immediate care, has not released information regarding the causes of his death.
Since October 7, 2023, the officially announced number of Palestinian detainees who died due to torture and dire conditions in Israeli prisons is 13; the numbers are likely higher.
The Committee stated that Israel also announced the deaths of detainees from the Gaza Strip, but continues to refuse releasing information about them, including their names.
The Palestinian Detainees’ Committee and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society held Israel responsible for Joma’s death, and for the lives of Palestinian detainees, subject to torture and very bad living conditions, and are denied access to adequate medical care.
His death brings the number of detainees who died in Israeli prisons since 1967, including those who were shot while in prison and those who died while being tortured, to 250.
Israel is currently holding more than 9100 Palestinian detainees, including 2558 who are held under arbitrary Administrative Detention orders, without charges or trial.
