RAMALLAH, Saturday, April 13, 2024 (WAFA) – Israeli occupation forces detained more than 150 Palestinian workers within two weeks while they were looking for employment opportunities in historic Palestine, according to a local official.
Secretary General of the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions, Shaher Saad, said that among the detainees were 15 workers who were detained at a military checkpoint east of occupied Jerusalem.
The Secretary stressed that since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation has been pursuing and chasing after Palestinian workers inside the 48 territories either from their workplaces or checkpoints despite obtaining entry permits.
Saad described the large-scale detentions waged against Palestinian workers as a crime that cannot be tolerated with.
“The Palestinian worker who is looking for a living pays around 1,500 shekels only to obtain an entry permit.”
Saad called on the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Labor Organization, the International Trade Union Confederation as well as all international institutions to intervene immediately and urgently to put pressure on Israel, the occupying power, to release the workers.
He also affirmed that international agreements and covenants guarantee the Palestinian worker the right to work within the 1948 territories with full rights like a foreign worker.
