Israeli forces, on Saturday detained Adnan Gheith, the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) Governor of occupied Jerusalem, after storming his home in Silwan, the Palestinian WAFA News Agency reported.

The home of Governor Gheith, in the occupied Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, was raided and searched by Israeli police, who proceeded to detain the government official.

Ghaith has been detained by the Israeli authorities at least 17 times, since August 2018, when he became Governor of Jerusalem.

Israel occupied the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip in 1967, after the Six-Day War. At that time, United Nations Security Council passed resolution 242, which required;

(i) Withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.

In 1980, the Israeli Knesset (parliament) passed Basic Law: Jerusalem, Capital of Israel, which states in Article 1 that “Jerusalem, complete and united, is the capital of Israel.”

In 2000, the Basic Law was amended in order to provide a legal and constitutional defense for the application of Israeli law in East Jerusalem and to also limit the ability to change the city’s “area” and jurisdiction.
