The Israeli paper Haaretz reported on Friday that Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, made a decision to release hundreds of Palestinian detainees belonging to the Fatah political party.
This proposition Netanyahu agreed to was crafted by US middle east peace envoy, George Mitchell. It is said the detainees slated for release are not sentenced to long term imprisonment.
Israeli sources in Jerusalem also reported Mitchell’s plan to hold indirect Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, similar to the negotiations between Israel and Syria that took place through the third party Turkey.
Netanyahu is said to have agreed to Mitchell’s proposal but Palestinian president Abbas has not responsed.
