Israeli TV Channel 10 reported Monday that Israel will start the construction of a separation wall along part of the border with Lebanon, in the north of the country. The construction will commence next week, and the wall will be built around the border town of al-Motella. The wall will be more than 2 kilometers (1.24 Miles) long and 10 meters (32.8 Feet) high. Israel claims that the wall also aims at preventing armed clashes between Israeli soldiers and Lebanese soldiers as their posts and towers are often a few meters away from each other.
Channel 10 reported that Israel had officially informed the Lebanese government of its intentions, and that the construction will be conducted through the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The Israeli Army first declared its intention to build the wall back in January this year, and said that the new wall “will serve in protecting the recently constructed buildings in the area from sniper fire stemming from Kafr Kalla Lebanese town, one kilometer away”.
