A British Yeshiva student died of wounds sustained as he was stabbed in a knife in the old city of Jerusalem, an Israeli medical source said on Wednesday at night.

The vicitim was with his American  colleague, when both were attacked by an unknown man who fled the scene.  The American was lightly wounded.  Family of 21-year-old Shmuel Mat refuses to authorize autopsy.

The one who was lightly wounded did not identify the assailant, yet he said he ‘thinks he was an Arab.’

The stabbing took place close to the Jaffa Gate, in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israeli police and security initiated a probe in the event.

According to the Israeli police, the attacker is a Palestinian and that the attack was nationaly motivated. Yet, the police has no definte clue who the assailant is, and based their accusation on a assumbtion by the American victim’s report.

The two victims, both in their twenties, are ultra-orthodox yeshiva students in the Old City.

One of the students managed to reach an Israeli police station some 200 meter away, and led the police to the location of the other wounded man, who was lying at the site of the stabbing.

The other yeshiva student, who sustained moderate injuries, said that he was walking with his friend towards the Western Wall while heading to their yeshiva.

Although the student told a paramedic that he had no idea to the identity of the attacker, he added that he “assumed he was an Arab”.

Paramedics transferred the critically injured student to Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital, while the other one was transferred to Shaare Zedek Medical Center, both are in Jerusalem.
