Hundreds of Palestinian security forces arrived in the West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday to help maintain security in the city as part of the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to restore law and order in the Palestinian areas.
The security forces came from Jericho, where they trained, in convoy of buses waiving Palestinian Flags, with Israeli military accompaniment. The forces were handed assault rifles and magazines of ammunition, as they arrived at PA headquarters in the city.
Nidal Assoli, commander of the National Security Forces in the West Bank, said the troops were initially trained to take control of four West Bank settlements Israel evacuated on Tuesday.
Israeli official sources said earlier this week that the four settlements evacuated in the West Bank will not be handed over the Palestinian security control.
The Palestinian Authority decided to make sure that the only legal weapon in the Palestinian controlled areas.
