The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, citing  the Israeli brutal war on the Lebanese people has decide to withdraw the Venezuelan ambassador to Israel.

He said: "It really causes indignation to see how the state of continues bombing, killing … with all of the power they have, with the support of the ."

In a television address he condemned both Israel and the US. He characterized ‘s attacks on as ‘genocide’ and declared  that the bore an equal responsibility because of its financial and military support for Israel.

Expressing a thought that many people in the world have expressed, he said that he found it difficult to explain to himself how it is that nobody does anything to stop the horror.

This makes Venezuela the first and only country to break diplomatic ties with . It should be noted that no Arab country has.

Although his government has until recently had good relations with Israel, Chavez has repeatedly criticized the Israeli offensive. During a recent visit to Iran, Chavez called Israeli attacks on Lebanon,  ‘a fascist outrage’.

This has been seen as a courageous measure, which many countries that enjoy good relations with Israel have so far failed to perform.

Making an anology with what was done to European Jews by the Nazis, Chavez said, ‘The Israeli elite repeatedly criticizes Hitler’s actions against the Jews, and indeed Hitler’s actions must be criticized, not just against the Jews but against the world. It’s also fascism what is doing to the Palestinian people … terrorism and fascism."

Venezuela has both Arab immigrant and Jewish communities and Venezuelan officials have insisted that the government will continue to fully respect the Jewish community despite its strong opposition to ‘s war in .

There is another comparison that Chavez could have made regarding the silence of the world now, not only as regards the Lebonese people, but the Palestiians too. It can be compared to the same world silence that occurred as Jews were being murdered  in WW II.
