Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas criticized Thursday the Palestinian homemade shells fire, calling them ‘idle’.
Abbas’s statement came during a joint short news conference with the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Javeir Solana.
Abbas told reporters “we have discussed the Israeli strikes on Gaza, the arrest and attacks on the West Banks as well as the last night meeting with factions to stop the idle rockets”.
The meeting comes in the shadow of continued Israeli bombardment of different areas in Gaza as well as the increasing Palestinian homemade shells fire on nearby Israeli towns”.
“What we are concerned about currently is finding out a way of current security deterioration and restoring a truce with Israel that includes the West Bank,’ Abbas said.
On another issue, Abbas asserted to his visiting EU official that the Palestinians have nothing to do with the Fatah-Al-Islam group in Lebanon, which has been fighting with the Lebanese army over the past several days.
Solana, from his part, voiced solidarity with the Palestinian people under the current worse conditions, saying ‘it is time to calm down the situation’.
Solana agreed with Abbas that it is time to end the rocket fire as well as the Israeli actions on the ground.
“Violence can not solve the problem and peace can not be achieved that way. The international community is in solidarity with you”, Solana told the news conference.
Meanwhile, President Abbas confirmed that Mr. Solana has handed him over an official decision to extend the mission of the EU monitors at the Rafah crossing terminal in southern Gaza.
