Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, stated Sunday that he will never accept any peace agreement that ‘divides Jerusalem’, adding that “Israel without Jerusalem is like a body without heart’.His statements came during a speech he gave as Israel was marking the so-called “Jerusalem Day’, the 45th anniversary of the occupation of the holy city.
Netanyahu said said he will never cede any part of Jerusalem, especially the area of the the ‘Temple Mount’, where al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock are located in occupied East Jerusalem.
‘Should the city fall in the hands of others, I doubt we will be able to avoid a religious war’, Netanyahu claimed, ‘Peace among faiths can only be maintained under Israeli sovereignty’.
His statements ignore the fact that millions of Palestinians have no access to religious Muslim and Christian holy sites in the occupied city.
Israel is also targeting the very existence of the Palestinian population in the city by its ongoing takeover, demolition of Palestinian homes, and its ongoing construction and expansion of illegal Jewish-only settlements.
