Hours after kidnapping him on Wednesday, the Israeli police released the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, the Palestine News Network (PNN) has reported.PNN said that Sheikh Hussein was interrogated for several hours after he was kidnapped earlier on Wednesday morning.
Israeli Police spokeswoman, Luba Samri, said that the police is still investigating “suspicions that the Sheikh might have encouraged act of disorder” that led to clashes with the Police and the army in the yards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem.
Furthermore, Engineer Mustafa Abu Zahra, head of a committee in charge of maintaining Islamic graveyards in Jerusalem, who was also kidnapped on Wednesday, was not released.
It is worth mentioning that Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, strongly denounced the arrest of the Mufti, and stated that the arrest is yet another Israeli violation to Freedom of Religion in Palestine.
