In a meeting with a lawyer of the Palestinian Detainees’ Committee, hunger-striking detainee Raed Rayyan, held at the Ramla prison clinic, said he is facing several serious complications after 103 days of ongoing hunger strike but is determined to continue the strike to his arbitrary Administrative Detention without charges.
Rayyan, 28, told the lawyer Fawwaz Shalloudi, who managed to visit him at the prison clinic, that his vision is very blurry and that he suffers serious migraines, fatigue, sharp pain in his joints, back, and abdomen, in addition to being unable to sleep without constantly waking up from the pain.
Rayyan added that he constantly feels that he is about to vomit, in addition to suffering spasms in his arms and legs, and requires a wheelchair whenever he leaves his bed.
The lawyer said that Rayyan also suffers from repeated episodes of high fever and that a doctor supervising his case told him that his body is consuming the proteins of his muscles and is starting “to eat itself” due to the lengthy and ongoing hunger strike.
Rayyan, from Beit Duqqu town, west of occupied Jerusalem, was slapped with the first Administrative Detention order for six months on November 3rd, 2021, before Israel slapped him with another six-month order. He is also a former political prisoner held by Israel for 21 months under Administrative Detention.
Rayyan also told Shalloudi about the suffering of detainee Khalil Awawda, 40, from Ethna town, west of the southern West Bank city of Hebron, who is continuing with the hunger strike for the sixteenth day, despite his bad health, especially after he ended the first hunger strike that lasted for 111 days when the Israeli authorities reneged on a verbal agreement to release him and slapped him with a new four-month Administrative Detention order.
Awawda was abducted on December 27th, 2021, and is currently at the Assaf Harofeh Israeli medical center. He is a married father of four children and is a former political prisoner who Israel held for many years.
