The Central Elections Commission (CEC), on Thursday, said that it received a Supreme Court decision, issued in its session held in Ramallah, to temporarily halt the cabinet’s decision to hold local elections until the court decides on the case raised before it.
In light of this, the CEC announced immediate cessation of all electoral activities which commenced two months ago, in adherence to the decision.
CEC said, according to Palestine News Network (PNN), that the elections stopped despite continuous efforts to provide a valid and appropriate electoral environment that enables the holding of transparent elections which meet the respect of the Palestinian people, and contribute to the end of the internal political division.
Local elections were set to take place on the 8th of October.
This morning, the Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip withdrew a Fateh (PLO) list that intended to run for the local elections.
