The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) announced on Friday, the death of a Palestinian detainee in Israeli prison.
In a statement, the PPS and the Prisoners Affairs Commission announced the death of the detainee, Raed Suleiman Asasa, 57, in Israeli prison. Asasa was a resident of the town of ‘Illar, north of Tulkarem, in the northwestern part of the occupied West Bank.
The statement added that the General Authority for Civil Affairs informed the organizations on Friday of the death of the Palestinian detainee.
The General Authority for Civil Affairs added that the slain Asasa was admitted to a hospital inside Israel on June 9 and died on Friday; he was being held in Israeli detention for a total of 27 days before his death.
The PPS and the Prisoners Affairs Commission announced that “With the martyrdom of the prisoner Asasa, the number of prisoners who were martyred since the genocide has risen to (72),” adding that “the number of martyrs of the prisoner movement whose identities are known since 1967 has reached (309) to date.”
The groups affirmed that “The martyrdom of detainee Asasa constitutes a new crime in the record of the brutal Israeli regime, which has committed all forms of crimes, including crimes against detainees with the aim of killing them. These crimes constitute another aspect of the ongoing genocide.”
The groups called on the International Human Rights groups to hold the Israeli regime accountable for its war crimes committed against Palestinian detainees and to impose sanctions.
Additionally, the groups called for an end to Israel’s exceptional immunity, with the world considering it above accountability and punishment.
WAFA correspondent quoted the slain detainee’s family who stated that the married father of three was suffering from pain in his legs and severe fatigue during his detention.
For its part, the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas released a statement mourning the death of the detainee, adding that he died as a result of the “tragic conditions and deliberate medical neglect inside the occupation’s prisons.”
The statement warned of the “dangerous conditions inside prisons, and we affirm that the issue of prisoners will remain at the forefront of our national priorities until they are all freed.”
The resistance movement appealed to the Palestinian citizens in the occupied West Bank to escalate their prisoner support activities, and called on Human Rights and Humanitarian organizations to increase their efforts to expose the crimes of the occupation and pressure it to cease its repressive policies against prisoners.
