Israeli authorities forced, on Friday, a Palestinian family to demolish their own home in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem, the Palestinian News & Information Agency (WAFA) reported.
According to Ra’ef Salaymeh, the homeowner, the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem coerced him to destroy his family’s home, under the pretext that it was built without an Israeli issued permit, despite his efforts to obtain permission for eight years.
The authorities threatened Salaymeh with a 100,000 shekel ($30,468 USD) fine if municipality crews carried out the demolition, forcing the 4 member family to tear down their own home, causing them to be homeless.
According to the latest United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Protection of Civilians Report, between February 8 and February 21, 2022;
“The Israeli authorities demolished, confiscated, or forced owners to demolish 29 Palestinian-owned homes and other structures in Area C and East Jerusalem, citing the lack of Israeli-issued building permits. As a result, 23 people were displaced, including eleven children, and the livelihoods of about 300 others were affected.”
