Occupied Palestine, February 19, 2022 (QNN) – 46 Israeli violations were recorded against Palestinian media and journalists in January 2022.
The Journalists’ Support Committee, a journalists’ rights group documenting media violations across the occupied Palestinian territories, said the Israeli violations varied between “arrest, extortion and direct field assault” of media personnel among other forms of harassment.
According to the group, 4 Palestinian journalists were arrested by Israeli forces in January.
It noted that the Israeli army and settlers committed “17 cases of assault and injury against journalists” during their coverage of the demolition of Palestinian homes in the occupied East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and peaceful anti-occupation protests in the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli forces often used rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters against Palestinian journalists, the group said.
The group also documented 18 cases of journalists being blocked from covering Israeli violations against the Palestinians.
According to the group, Israeli forces raided the house of one journalist, threatened 2 female journalists, while restricting the social media accounts of 4 others for “violating publishing instructions.”
In January, the journalists’ rights group said that 17 Palestinian journalists and media workers were held in Israeli prisos.
‘Israel’ violently represses journalists documenting its crimes against Palestinians – chiefly targeting Palestinian reporters but not exclusively – because narrative control is a crucial component of political control.
Between the year 2000 and September 2018, ‘Israel’ killed 43 journalists in the West Bank and Gaza according to the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedom, MADA.
