United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the international community not to be deterred by Israeli backlash over the expected recognition of Palestinian statehood.
In a press interview Guterres stated that Israel is actively pursuing policies aimed at the “total destruction of Gaza” and the “gradual annexation of the West Bank.”
He emphasized that any justification offered by Israel, whether to defend its actions in Palestinian territories or to pressure countries recognizing Palestine, is part of a broader strategy to block the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Guterres reaffirmed that the only viable resolution to the conflict is a two-state solution, with an independent Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel.
He rejected any alternative that would leave Palestinians under occupation or systemic discrimination without rights on their own land, describing upcoming international recognition of Palestinian statehood as “a profoundly symbolic milestone.”
Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Guterres described the situation as “morally, politically, and legally unbearable,” citing widespread famine, the collapse of healthcare services, and overcrowded shelters with no adequate housing.
On Monday, September 22, 2025, a high-level summit will convene at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, jointly led by Saudi Arabia and France. During the session, several countries—including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Portugal, Malta, and France—are expected to officially declare their recognition of Palestinian statehood.
